Find Your Authentic Self: What Andy Sachs and Elle Woods Taught Me About Wellness

True wellness isn’t just about nutrition or exercise; it is about living authentically. I used to think a fast-paced career meant thriving, but working in personal training and real estate left me feeling disconnected from myself. I was constantly drained by the pressure to perform and the endless chore of posting promotional videos online.

Stepping away from that hustle to become a full-time server was my ultimate wellness breakthrough. Like Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada, I had to leave a high-pressure environment to reclaim my life. Like Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, I realized that true happiness comes from staying entirely true to myself.

Steps to Reclaim Your Energy:

  • Audit your energy drains: Identify tasks or expectations that make you feel fake or exhausted
  • Prioritize peace over status: Choose consistency and mental clarity over a stressful title or obligation
  • Drop the forced curation: Give yourself permission to disconnect from online trends and just be present, documenting good vibes along the way

Protecting your inner peace is the highest form of self-care. When you stop forcing yourself into a mold that doesn’t fit, your health and mindset will naturally thrive.

Try this today:

Write down one daily obligation that feels forced, and brainstorm one small way you can protect your peace and feel more genuine about it.

For example, I recently realized that I don’t like running ultras. But I do like crewing them. I also like the idea of keeping my heart healthy so I’ve been way more motivated and excited about doing my 20 minutes of daily cardio. Much more me, and I feel great about it! Instead of forcing myself to train for an ultra race, I reclaimed my energy focusing on being genuinely happy, healthy, and fit – however that feels right for me is what I’m leaning into. This concept piggy backs off one of my core philosophies: Plan, Do, Review 🙂

What’s the best way to deal with negative thoughts?

For every negative thought say 2 positive things. Accept that negative thoughts exist but they are not you. What we focus on expands. If I think about complaining, instead of actually complaining, I work to breathe through the sensation in the moment (usually only takes a few seconds but one minute is also typical) then say 2 positive things. Can be out loud or to yourself. Thoughts dictate emotions. Emotions dictate thoughts. Good thoughts and positive emotions = happiness. It takes work to be happy. It’s easy to complain and focus on negative thoughts, that takes no additional effort or training. But the more we work to plant those positive thoughts, the weeds will quite literally be weeded out and you’ll see them less and less.

Daily Writing Prompt

Is your life today what you pictured a year ago?

This time last year, I was serving part time planning to explore other career options – maybe go all in on real estate or do something completely new like social media marketing for small businesses. I was considering it all, even going back to school.

For the past few years, my biggest hurdle was finding a job I could actually tolerate, consistent, and flexible (knowing my personality). I’m 29, real estate license, no college, serving experience, fitness training experience, marketing experience.

I looked into every possible option. Wrote them all out. I tried something new with some warehouse work – even pitched my marketing ideas. Things we’re cool, but the work hurt (packaging all day) and the pay wasn’t enough all said and done.

As time went on, I just felt a pull back to serving and I started to consider what life would be like if I went all in (open up 7 days a week availability – avg 5 nights a week). Something I didn’t consider as an option before.

Through research, I found most jobs are day jobs. Serving offers 2nd shift – 3-11pm. Perfect for me. I get my workout and lunch in, walks with my dog, and quality time with my hubby (who also serves full time, same schedule). Check.

Most jobs don’t have much flexibility. I’m the type to want to take off for 2 months and go roadtrip (did this in 2024 southeast usa) – and serving let’s me do that. We go during the slower months for a nice reset. This upcoming year we already have 6 camping trips booked, something we couldn’t do say if we had “real jobs” like union or corporate. Check.

So I eventually realized I needed to choose my job based on the lifestyle I wanted. Making great money, maxing out retirement accounts, saving up for that next rental, health insurance locked in, minimal taxes. Plus my days feel like two in one, since I get my whole day with my hubby and pup, then head into work WITH my hubby and we rock serving together (sometimes in the same section). Check, check, check, check, check, AND CHECK.

Life’s been super fun since going all in on serving. I have one focus. I’m not trying to build a business. I’m not looking for or even entertaining side work (sorry to those ignored along the way lol). I work, I leave, and I leave the work at work. Nothing to figure out. I learn from my mistakes and keep growing and improving. It’s a beautiful cycle.

As I’m writing this, it’s 12:00pm on a Tuesday in December. I’m in the back bedroom at our writing desk, with the window next to me slightly open, a nice winter chill. We just had a snowfall, the trees are lookin gorgeous. The sun is shining in. I feel safe and warm. I feel free. Our pup champ is laying on his side next to me snoring. My hubs is in the kitchen eating lunch. I’m about to take Champ out for a walk, then get ready for our shift tonight. Life is good.

If you like my story, Joe was going through a similar career journey the same time I was – read more about his story here

With all that being said, let’s just say, no this isn’t where I thought we’d be a year ago – this is so much better.

What is one thing you would change about yourself?

Did my annual run-through of 28 questions to ask yourself and I discovered some weaknesses and areas of improvement. Below are my notes:

Top 4 weaknesses:

1. negative thinking –> reframing
stay aware & be ready with positives

2. procrastination –> 5 sec rule, 5 min rule
do it right away or schedule it in

3. indecision –> decision book
think it out before deciding yes or no

4. fear of criticism –> self confidence formula
consistency over perfection

How to limit, avoid gossiping:

  • become aware
  • don’t fuel the fire
  • use words of encouragement
  • walk away if needed “oh shit I gotta go, hold that thought”
  • change the subject

How to forgive and let go:

  • acknowledge the hurt and emotions
  • understand and gain perspective
  • make a conscious choice to forgive

Working to get 1% better everyday. I’m not perfect, not near perfect. How can I improve so the quality of my experiences improve? How can I be better to have a more positive impact on those around me?

What are your feelings about eating meat?

Friends not food! I’m fortune enough to have a grocery store close by that sells fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, grains. If I have the choice, I’m not choosing meat. I’m going for beans, peas, tempeh, or tofu for protein. I love the whole-food plant-based diet – tons of health benefits and eco-friendly! Here are some of my notes on the affects of industrial animal agriculture. And more about how plant-based diet protects wildlife. I’ve been following this since 2017 and am loving it! Here’s my good eats album with all my food pics, enjoy (-:

Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?

It really depends on the time of year! I love the beach during the summer months – laying out all day with a cooler of snacks, a good book, and my hubby! Maybe a cold six pack and a long sleeve for when the sun starts to set. Then in the spring and fall seasons, the mountains are perfect! Ideal camping weather. Even in the winter to hit the slopes and snowboard. I guess I love both really! I’m making beach and mountains trips a priority in 2026 by planning my Kevin’s rule now. Good vibes only! Sending many blessings your way!
