Impossible List

5k a day for 31 days (and counting!)

Another goal checked off of the Impossible List! Today (7/1/23) marks 68 days in a row of walking / running a daily 5k.

What really inspired my to take up the 5k a day for 31 days challenge was to honor my Poppop who I love and miss beyond words.

Doing something everyday in honor of those who cannot. That thought motivates me and keeps me stepping everyday.

Accepting what is (the pain, the love, all of it) & powering through doing the best I can now.

Never did I think a daily loop around the block would turn into doing a daily mile for over 500 days (and counting), and a daily 5k for 31 days (and counting).

I simply say yes, lace up, and get after my goal day after day, and it’s adding up! One step at a time. One day at a time.

Through this experience, I’ve learned more about…

  • consistency: doing something small everyday no matter what’s going on in life; to be consistent is to carve out time daily to get it done, or to do it daily
  • integrity: making a promise and following through no matter how I’m feeling; to have integrity is doing what I said I’d do – doing my absolute best to follow through on whatever I said yes to

I often sit and ponder about what life is trying to show me and how these lessons can apply to my life situation; how can I use this lesson to move the needle just 1%?

Some life lessons since starting 5k a day:

  • Work on myself more intentionally (goal, strategy, tactics)
  • Make my heart happy: exercise, good diet, water, sleep, deep breaths
  • Practice building confidence and discipline to see my goals through

What’s next? For now, I’m keeping the daily 5k streak going and holding focus on the Impossible List.

My 2023 Misogi is to run 26.2 miles (doubled from last year), so that’s a big goal I’m working toward right now!

Stay tuned as I continue to train for a 12 hour race coming up early October 2023 🙂

To @joediandrea, thank you for inspiring me to chase my dreams and for loving and supporting me the whole way.

To @cam00913, thank you for being so loving and supportive, for trying new things, and for talking to me about your dad, my Poppop.

Check out my ~runs~ highlight on my personal insta for recent runs.

If this blog inspires you, I encourage you to commit to your own fitness challenge.

Maybe it’s a daily loop around the block, daily mile, daily 5k, daily dimes (10 push-ups, 10 pull-ups, and 10 squats) – whatever your creative mind can come up with, the main goal is to do something every single day no matter what. THAT is where the real gains happen.

Fulfilling a small promise to yourself every day helps build the self-reliance, confidence, and discipline required to see goals through to the end.

Set a goal and get after it DAILY. Getting 1% healthier everyday. Love you all. Thanks for reading and for all of the love and support. Keep on stepping lil savages ♡

Update! I ended up clipping out 150+ days of 5k a day. Took me up to the Hainesport 12hr race on October 7th, 2023.

If you’re training for your own race and/or want to work on your mental health, I found so much value in 5k a day – give it a try 🙂

Yearly Habit Challenge

Before we get into it, a lil note…

Thank you for being here. I know not everyday is an easy one and I want you to know that I’m happy you’re here. I see you putting in the hard work. I see you asking the tough questions, setting boundaries, wanting better for yourself. I see you doing what you need to day in and day out. It all is moving in your favor. Bit by bit you’re getting better, healthier, stronger. Keep going. Brighter days are coming. The best is yet to come.

Hi friends! Happy new year 🙂

In the spirit of planning for the new year and setting up our year for success, here’s a fun yearly challenge to help us build healthier, stronger habits for ourselves.

This past year, we talked about how what you eat adds up and the power of daily routines.

It’s one thing to know what to do…

It’s another thing to actually do.

In other words, knowledge is only power when we apply it.

We can bridge the gap between knowing and doing through this Happiness-Project-Inspired yearly habit challenge:

Choose 12 habits to work (1 for each month)

Write out 12 habits you’d like to work on this year. Think about where you’re at in life right now and what you could use more of. Then match the habits with the months. Below is mine for some inspiration 🙂

  • January: eat more plants
  • February: do the little things without bringing attention to them
  • March: get organized
  • April: don’t take things personally
  • June: eat more fruit
  • July: wear more sunscreen
  • August: spend time with friends
  • September: mobility during morning and night routines
  • October: get really uncomfortable once a day
  • November: plan for next year
  • December: ask tough questions

Being healthy and fit comes down to your habits: what you’re doing and consuming on a daily basis.

Focusing on one habit at a time gives us the space to explore said habit and adjust it to fit into our lives.

Explore

For the first two weeks of the month, we take the space to explore a new habit by asking questions like…

How will my life change for the better if I build this new habit?
pros, cons, how will this habit impact me in the long-run? how will this habit affect those around me?

Is this a realistic habit for my life’s situation?
some examples of unrealistic habits based on life situations:

  • get to the gym everyday vs get a 30 min workout in everyday
what if the gym is closed or the weather’s bad? do you miss a day because of something you can’t control?
  • read 10 pages vs read for 30 mins
10 pages may take you longer or less than 30 mins to read depending on the book or your reading level

What does it look like to have this habit going in the day to day?
visualize and really feel yourself doing these things

What do I need to do on an on-going basis to help build this habit?
same thing here, visualize the process and feel all the feels

Adjust

For the last two weeks of the month, we adjust a new habit to fit into our lives.

We start the work to incorporate this new habit in our day to day and work to keep the habit going.

This is where our explore research and findings come in handy. You already know what you have to do. Keep track of your progress in a Google sheet or doc for easy reflection and adjustment.

Wrapping Up

If we are trying to build multiple healthy habits at once, none of them get the proper time and attention. Lots of wants and wishes get swept under the rug for lack of time, energy, and attention.

Focusing in on one habit at a time allows us to create a solid foundation to build on.

Challenge yourself: Choose 12 habits to work on for the next year (1 for each month).

We’ve all heard the saying: “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Brick by brick 🙂 love y’all

Mindset

How your thoughts are affecting your life…

Glass half full or half empty?

Frame of mind. How you view the situation.

A challenge comes up

Do you see it as a burden and something that is messing up your schedule and day?

Or do you see it as an opportunity to take a breather and be in the moment to learn something new that will benefit you long term?

Someone has a different view point than you

Do you find them incompetent and not worth the time to hear?

Or do you find value in their experience and see the conversation as an opportunity to grow and work on your skills?

When you think about success

Do you feel angry for you were not blessed with a “better/ easier” life?

Or do you feel grateful that we all are capable of personal development, growth and change?

How we view the situation at hand can really impact the experiences we have during our lifetime. It’s no secret that our choices are the sole reason for both our happiness and unhappiness.

How we decide to act and respond goes hand in hand with what we receive back from the world.

It’s really no wonder why negative is met with more negative, and positive with more positive.

We attract what we send out.

Lessons via the Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday

Be the casual, relaxed person in every situation who tells everyone else to take a breath and not to worry. Don’t be the agitator, the paranoid, the worrier, or the irrational. Be the calm, not the liability. And it will catch on.

Sticking with the same unsuccessful pattern is easy. It doesn’t take any thought or any additional effort, which is probably why most people do it.

If you want to change, choose to learn from your failures and consciously opt to do things differently: to tweak and change until we actually get the results we’re after.

At the very core, people want freedom, happiness, and respect from their peers. These are simple and straightforward to acquire: through our choices.

The Power of Positive Thinking

The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale is a powerful resource I use in my self healing practice.

Peale addresses real life issues that we all face day in and day out, and the negative thought patterns we all know so well.

He provides practical tools to solving them in our daily lives today.

Overall, his tools and practices have guided my initial thought pattern to focus more on the positive.

I have been able to develop a regular thought pattern of positivity, meaning that I generally expand on the good in the situations that I’m facing.

This benefit alone helps me cope better with stressors since I have found tremendous strength through these positive thinking practices.

There’s no destination, only the journey.

Although it’s constant practice, and I still have so many low moments of doubts and fear, I am always able to bounce back by using the practices taught in Peale’s book. Highly recommended!
